About this tool

This tool helps parents and caregivers find the right dose of children’s Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin/Advil (ibuprofen). You choose the medicine and enter your child’s weight, and it shows the dose in mL or tablets for each common product strength.

Weight gives the most accurate dose, but you can use age if you don’t know the weight. The doses come from the AAP weight bands, which start at 6 pounds; weight in kg is converted for you. The tool also gives warnings. Under 6 pounds, call your child’s doctor before giving any medicine. Do not give ibuprofen to babies under 6 months unless the doctor says so. For children under 2 years, check with the doctor before giving acetaminophen. A baby under 12 weeks with a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher needs to be seen by a doctor right away.

The result tells you how often to give the medicine and how many doses are allowed in 24 hours, plus safety tips and signs that mean you should call the doctor. Doses follow the American Academy of Pediatrics HealthyChildren.org Acetaminophen Dosing Tables (updated January 30, 2026) and Ibuprofen Dosing Table (2024).

Common questions

How often can I give my child Tylenol or Motrin?

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be given every 4 hours if needed, no more than 5 doses in 24 hours. Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) can be given every 6 to 8 hours if needed, no more than 4 doses in 24 hours, with food or milk if it upsets the stomach.

Can I give ibuprofen to a baby under 6 months?

No, not unless your doctor says so. Ask your doctor about acetaminophen (Tylenol) instead. Also, a baby under 12 weeks with a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher should be seen by a doctor right away, before giving medicine.

When should I call the doctor about my child’s fever?

Call or get care if your child is under 3 months with a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, has a fever over 104°F (40°C) or for more than 3 days, is very sleepy, has trouble breathing, a stiff neck, a rash that doesn’t fade, few wet diapers, or a seizure.
