At a glance
- Use a clean, comfortably warm compress; never squeeze or pop the bump.
- A firm, less painful lump may be a blocked gland called a chalazion.
- An ordinary stye should not reduce vision or cause pain inside the eye.
Is it a stye, chalazion or pink eye?
A stye is usually sore and may have a small pus-filled tip. A chalazion is trapped oil in a blocked gland; it may start tender but often becomes a firmer, less painful lump. Pink eye more often causes redness across the eye surface and discharge rather than one localized eyelid bump. Appearance alone is not always enough to tell them apart.
How do I use a warm compress safely?
Wash your hands. Wet a clean washcloth with warm, not hot, water and test the temperature before placing it gently on the closed eyelid. Hold it there for 5 to 10 minutes as tolerated, several times a day. Rewarm the cloth as it cools and supervise your child throughout.
Let the bump drain naturally if it opens. Do not squeeze it, puncture it or pull out an eyelash. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until the area has healed. Do not use someone else's antibiotic or steroid eye drops.
When does a swollen eyelid need medical care?
Get urgent medical assessment for reduced vision, pain in the eye itself, difficulty moving the eye, rapidly spreading swelling, or fever with an unwell child. These are not features to manage as a simple stye at home. If swelling keeps you from checking the eye, seek advice promptly.
Arrange an appointment if the bump is very painful, repeatedly returns, grows large or is not improving over the next few weeks. Large or persistent chalazia can affect vision in young children, so an eye clinician may recommend further treatment.
How long does an eyelid bump last?
A stye often settles over days to a couple of weeks. A chalazion can take longer because the blocked oil and inflammation must resolve. A clinician can check persistent bumps and decide whether prescription treatment or a procedure is needed. Repeated bumps may be associated with eyelid inflammation called blepharitis.
Common questions
Can my child spread a stye to other people?
Avoid sharing face towels and wash hands before and after touching the eyelid. Do not rub the eye or squeeze the bump.
Does every stye need antibiotics?
No. Many improve with warm compresses and time. Spreading infection or a persistent painful bump needs an examination so treatment can be chosen safely.
