Tap your baby’s age, then answer two quick questions about eczema and allergy. You’ll see what to feed and a peanut plan.
This guide helps parents know when and how to start solid foods and how to give peanut to their baby safely. You pick your baby's age and answer two questions: whether your baby has eczema, and whether they have had a reaction to egg or another food.
The feeding advice changes with age. Under 4 months, babies should have only breast milk or formula. From 4 to 5 months it lists signs of readiness, such as good head control and sitting with support. At 6 to 8 months it suggests soft, iron-rich foods first; at 9 to 11 months, soft finger foods; and from 12 months, family foods and whole cow's milk of about 16 to 24 oz a day.
The peanut plan depends on risk. Babies with severe eczema or a food allergy should see their doctor before the first taste. Babies with mild or moderate eczema can start peanut at home around 6 months, and babies with neither can have it with other first foods. The tool explains how to prepare peanut safely, which reactions need 911, and foods to avoid before 12 months. It follows the 2017 NIAID addendum guidelines, AAP 2019 guidance and a 2021 consensus on food allergy prevention.
Most babies are ready around 6 months, and some between 4 and 6 months. Signs of readiness include holding the head up well, sitting with support, and swallowing food instead of pushing it out. Solids before 4 months are not recommended.
Never give whole peanuts or spoonfuls of peanut butter. Mix 2 teaspoons of smooth peanut butter with 2–3 teaspoons of warm water, breast milk or formula. Give a small taste, wait 10 minutes, then give the rest slowly. Keep it up about 3 times a week.
Babies with severe eczema or an egg or other food allergy should see their doctor before the first peanut taste; the doctor may suggest an allergy test or a first taste in the office. With mild or moderate eczema, peanut can start at home around 6 months.
